BURGER KING REDESIGN CONCEPTS FOR THE FUTURE
Last month we saw Taco Bell unveil a new drive-thru/pickup concept designed to meet a growing need for low-/no-contact interactions. Burger King has also been considering how to best serve customers in this pandemic era and has introduced several new concepts that include a triple drive-thru, burger pickup lockers, takeout counters and more. The triple drive-thru concept will have one lane reserved for delivery drivers. Another concept will have dedicated parking spots where customers can pull up, order with the app and have food brought out to their vehicle. A walk-up order window is also being considered. Burger King reported that 85% of its Q2 sales came from the drive-thru.
MCDONALD’S TO TEST MORE SUSTAINABLE COFFEE CUP
In early 2021, McDonald’s locations in the UK will begin testing a new reusable coffee cup system in an effort to reduce waste that’s put into landfills. For a small deposit, customers can choose one of the reusable cups, and when finished, they put it in a designated bin and receive their deposit back. They can also leave the store with the cup and deposit it in a designated bin in another location to receive their refund, or they can carry it with them when they return for more McDonald’s coffee. Returned cups will be sterilized and reused with another customer—just as any coffee cup at any restaurant would be.
INNOVATIVE WAY TO USE FOOD TRUCKS THIS YEAR
Supermarket product sampling has long been a staple for CPG brands to get their new products into the hands of shoppers. With product sampling currently shelved, one company has found an innovative way to sample its items using a ghost food truck. Strong Roots, a manufacturer of plant-based frozen foods, has partnered with a New Jersey food truck to develop a custom menu that features its products. The food truck is only accessible online with orders distributed by delivery app partners. With each order, Strong Roots includes marketing brochures and coupons. The Strong Roots items have become best-sellers for the food truck, and grocery stores in areas where the food truck delivers are experiencing an increase in coupon redemption.
