PepsiCo heating homes with potato chips
PepsiCo has found a unique way to reduce its carbon footprint in Belgium. A new community in the city of Veurne has partnered with the food and beverage company to warm homes using heat waste from a local Lay’s factory. The vapor byproduct of cooking 20 tons of potatoes an hour will be used to heat the radiators and tap water of the community’s first houses “sometime in the first half of 2022,” ultimately reaching 500 homes in the next decade.
Heinz developing a paper ketchup bottle
Heinz is partnering with Pulpex to develop and test the world’s first paper packaging for a sauce brand. Previously, Pulpex worked with Johnnie Walker on a paper whisky bottle. The ketchup brand plans to eventually bring the product to market as an option for consumers looking for sustainable packaging. Doing so would be one way to help Kraft Heinz reach its long-term environmental goals of 100% “recyclable, reusable, or compostable packaging by 2025” and net-zero emissions by 2050.
